Hawaiian born, Kali Montero was raised in Hawaiian surf and learned to surf the ancient Hawaiian style by first studying the nuances of waves from his “Kupuna”.

Raised and first learning to surf on the West side with some of the ‘first families’ of surfing Kali later came under the tutelage of the legendary Duke Paoa Kahanamoku “father of modern day surfing” who instilled in him the perpetuation of surfing as a Hawaiian heritage and gift to the world. Kali continued to learn and honed his craft from some of the legendary ‘beach boys’ of Hawaii and spent a quarter of a century teaching thousands this ancient Sport of Kings.

Hungry to learn as much as he could about the sport he loved. Kali also studied under the Hawaiian masters of surfboard design and shaping. Not satisfied he competed for many years specializing in big wave competition which brought him to the international arenas of Hawaii, Australia, and California. Kali has also traveled extensively into Bali, Polynesia, Philippines, Viet Nam, Japan, Costa Rica, West Coast and East Coast “soul” surfing long before it became the thing to do.

Realizing the importance of a formal education Kali attended and graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Business and worked in the banking industry for a number of years before settling on a real estate career in 1985. Kali is licensed in Hawaii, Florida and New Jersey and currently practices real estate in Boca Raton, FL.

Arriving in Florida in 1996 as the East Coast rep for Blue Hawaii Surfboards and later Aloha Surfboards, Kali is the founder and, currently, the “Kumu Kahuna O He’e Nalu” (Head Surfing Instructor) for Island Water Sports, Deerfield Bch, FL., Free Surf Lessons, which is the largest of its kind in the United States and surfing consultant on everything from surfing, instruction, surfboards, travel, and accessories.  Kali, also, teaches at several surfing venues throughout Florida.

Understanding the need for a more formalized course of instruction with individualized attention and from numerous requests. Kali established Big Kahuna Surf School to satisfy this need. Big Kahuna Surf School provides each student the impetus to shorten the learning curve while increasing each student’s confidence, knowledge and expectations.
